The band!

Band Bio

Formed as the creative endeavor of musical couple Ashleigh and Cody Cooper, Blockhouse Valley quickly gained a reputation for the unique energy the band brings to a roots Americana instrumentation. In particular, their unique arrangements of popular songs have allowed them to connect with audiences of all ages. The band, consisting of voice, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and upright bass, would suggest a traditional folk or bluegrass group, but audiences are often surprised when the setlist weaves in crowd-pleasing renditions of artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ashleigh and Cody’s original music draws deeply from the American Rust Belt, capturing the textures of Midwest living and Appalachian roots. Influenced by regional folk and bluegrass as much as by the alternative, rock, blues, pop, and country of the 90s and 00s, Blockhouse Valley creates music that blends grit and heart with modern relevance. From their first EP (2023) to their most recent full-length album It’s Alright (2025), the band continues to craft songs that bear the weight of Midwest existential thoughts, always tempered with a sense of hope or humor. On stage, they deliver an energetic performance,  through driving rhythms, exceptional instrumentals, and the vocal prowess and wit of front-woman, Ashleigh. Their eclectic original music and refreshing interpretations of old favorites keep festival and listening room crowds alike engaged from the first chord to the last.

What is a "Blockhouse Valley"?

The Blockhouse Valley is a place in east Tennessee that Cody's family has lived for many generations over hundreds of years. Just outside of Oak Ridge (birthplace of the American Atomic Age) and not too far of a drive from the Smokey Mountains, the area is a blend of Tennessee history and culture. The name comes from a small fortification that used to exist in the valley. Cody always felt that his familiar lands would make a great name for a band. Luckily, Ashleigh agreed and the name has stuck ever since!
